TOWN 'N COUNTRY - A bat-house-building binge at Upper Tampa Bay Park could provide shelter to as many as 1,800 bats while helping an Eagle as well.
Alan Moch, 14, led the project last month to build six bat houses at the park as the final stage in pursuing Eagle Scout rank. He coordinated 28 volunteers on July 17, demonstrating how to build the structures and supervising his crews in the workshop and the field.
"I think he was kind of amazed at himself and what he was able to accomplish," said his father, Jeff Moch, the assistant Scout master for Troop 339. "He was the superintendent. He had to direct this project. He had to show leadership."
By the end of the day, volunteers had contributed 218 hours. Alan, who is entering ninth grade at Tampa Catholic, racked up 30 hours on the project.
