Will avoiding left turns be the right move?

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about one of the streets in Tampa I most despise — Waters Avenue.

It is is second on my list because it's difficult to turn off, and at points along the road there are no turn lanes or medians to help.

But one reader suggested I look outside the "driving box" and try something different.

"A suggestion to your driving dilemma on Waters Avenue, instead of complaining about other drivers whom you appear to blame for your dilemma, why don't you try a different approach," the e-mail said. "Instead of attempting to make a left turn in the face of oncoming traffic, use the UPS mantra, avoid all left turns whenever possible."

The e-mail got me thinking. Left turns can be a nuisance. A few years ago, the United Parcel Service decided to reroute their trips to avoid as many left turns as possible.
